UK city councils said to be unprepared for data loss

Local authorities in the UK should be doing more to protect their most sensitive information against data loss, as a new study has revealed many have not tested their recovery plans.

A freedom of information (FOI) request from Darabarracks to councils in all the UK’s major cities revealed that while all respondents have plans in place for what to do in the event of a problem, almost four out of ten have not tested these in the last 12 months.

This could mean that if they do experience data loss, their procedures for recovering may not work as expected, which could leave them struggling to continue operating.

Peter Groucutt, managing director of Databarracks, observed this could be particularly challenging for public sector organisations, as they not only need to protect revenue-generating systems such as council tax, but they also need to safeguard critical care systems such as Children’s Services.

“The results of our FOI request exposed that a significant proportion of city councils had not tested plans for over a year, meaning that they cannot be confident in their effectiveness in the event of a genuine crisis,” he said.
