Strategies to boost security ‘must be comprehensive’

Businesses keen to ensure they are doing all they can to prevent the need for potentially damaging data breaches should now be taking a more comprehensive approach to security than they have done in the past.

Vice-president of global professional services at Avecto Andrew Avanessian stated there is a growing disconnect between the perception of business-critical risks among IT departments and the true potential dangers companies face, ITProPortal reports.

Data recovery procedures may therefore not be up to scratch if firms are not aware of the true challenges they face.

Mr Avanessian argued: “In order to defend against advanced threats you need to have a defence in-depth approach. Antivirus software was fine 15 years ago, but with malware evolving at an incredible pace it’s just not effective enough.”

He concluded that growing constraints on security budgets for IT departments mean that every penny needs to be spent wisely and therefore having a clear image of the existing risks posed to a business network is a must.
