Smaller firms ‘face increased risk of data loss’

A new study published by Kaspersky Lab has highlighted the extent to which small to medium-sized businesses have suffered data loss in the three years.

According to the security software provider’s research, more than one-quarter (27 per cent) of smaller companies have required data recovery after losing some form of sensitive data.

The survey polled IT professionals from around the world between 2011 and 2014, finding that 22 per cent of businesses of all sizes have been affected by data loss over this period.

It was an interesting development to see this figure rise sharply for small businesses though, as this demonstrates a current lack of effective data protection standards among this group, which may not be that surprising given the limited resources many companies in this category have to draw upon.

Overall, companies operating within the utilities and energy industry were shown to be the most likely to have suffered data loss in the last three years (40 per cent), while the telecoms industry was shown to have the highest level of discerned IT vulnerabilities (35 per cent).

It is wise to choose a data recovery company who has a track record in recovering from the type of data loss you have experienced.
