Customer data ‘must be properly protected’

Businesses have a responsibility to ensure the sensitive customer data they hold is not placed at risk of loss or exposure, with a number of significant threats currently being seen by firms.

Michael Geisler, regional head at Capillary Technologies, told Gulf News ensuring data security is becoming increasingly difficult for businesses, but it is an issue they must take seriously if they do not wish to suffer significant consequences.

Measures firms should be considering – if they have not been implemented already – include encryption for all data during transfer and storage, user authentication and the adoption of international standards for data security, such as ISO 27001:2013.

“Retailers need to seamlessly orchestrate security into all processes and applications to eliminate the risk of customer data loss,” Mr Geisler stated.

Furthermore, in the event of a security breach or emergency event that leads to information loss or corruption, it is essential companies act swiftly to utilise data recovery technologies that could help to restore these lost files and avoid serious sanctions for the business.
