Remote Data Recovery Service

Ontrack® Remote Data Recovery™ (RDR™) is a proprietary service that provides the fastest, most convenient, most cost-effective solution for data loss situations where the hardware is still functioning properly. With RDR, data recovery is performed remotely via a highly secure connection between your system and Kroll Ontrack® .

Because shipping time is eliminated, engineers can start working on your drive as soon as a connection is established.

Remote Data Recovery is therefore only suitable for non-physical hardware problems such as:

  • Inaccessible partition
  • Formatted drive
  • Deleted files
  • Deleted array
  • RAID configuration
  • File corruption (e.g., Microsoft® Exchange® Server, SQL® Server, SharePoint® Server, Oracle® Server, etc)

However, if your media is physically damaged, Kroll Ontrack can still help you recover your data using our in-lab data recovery services.

Remote Data Recovery Process

Remote Data Recovery is a 2-step process consisting of the following steps.

>> Step 1: Customer hardware setup and client install
>> Step 2: Connection process

Step 1: Set up your hardware and install RDR client

Attach the hard disk drive to be recovered to a working Microsoft Windows system (host system).

Important! Do not allow Check Disk (CHKDSK) or other repair utilities to begin examining the target hard disk drive as these repairs may lead to irretrievable data from the storage media.

Download and install the Ontrack Remote Data Recovery software to the host system.

Reboot the host system.

Step 2: The connection process and security issues

Ontrack Remote Data Recovery software connects to a secure server using an outgoing TCP/IP connection on Port 80 (the WWW port), creating a tunnel/point-to-point connection. Connection via a proxy server is also supported. (You may need assistance from your IT staff for proxy server settings).

Your system’s security is assured

The secure connection between your system and Kroll Ontrack is used for the sole purpose of remotely controlling Ontrack Data Recovery software applications that search, find, and extract your data. The data on the target drive is never copied to Kroll Ontrack servers.

The recovery software applications, keyboard command data, and video are all that is sent through the secure connection. (Video is simply the real-time image you would see on your host screen as the data is being recovered—not video files. These images are blacked out as they are proprietary.)

RDR does not use a third-party hosting site or communication process. The RDR client software allows for a direct TCP/IP connection to the RDR server. The Microsoft Windows client uses the Microsoft® Crypto® API/ RSA encryption (128, 192, or 2561 bit)provided with Internet Explorer. The entire HTTP communication protocol is proprietary to Kroll Ontrack.

Remote data recovery capabilities

Ontrack RDR can recover data from:
  • All Microsoft Windows versions with any file system, including internally corrupted Windows Backup files
  • Virtualisation virtual disk recoveries including Vmware®, Microsoft® Hyper-V®, Citrix®, and others. Kroll Ontrack works on the individual virtual disk files or works on the hypervisor’s data storage volume to perform the recovery.
  • Apple® (hard drive must be slaved to a Windows machine for recovery): Please note, there are some limitations to remote Mac recoveries; during the data copy process, some files may not contain Mac specific attributes, however, the file will open.
  • Linux with file systems EXT, XFS, and many more (hard drive must be slaved to a Windows machine for recovery)
  • Most UNIX® flavours such as AIX, SCO, SGI, SUN, VXFS, and many more (hard drive must be slaved to a Windows machine for recovery)
  • Novell® NetWare® 3 and above. Traditional NetWare file system and NSS
  • Microsoft Windows or NetWare software RAIDs, mirrors, spans, volume sets, and so forth, including Dynamic Disk
  • Most hardware RAID problems, even with one failed hard disk in a RAID 5 configuration. (This requires the client to setup the hardware; an Ontrack Remote Data Recovery engineer is available to assist by means of a conference call.)
  • Microsoft® Exchange Server Information Store database files that have internal corruption, or deleted mailboxes or messages. Successful recoveries can be achieved even when the Information Store files are missing or deleted.
  • Microsoft® SQL® Server database files that have internal corruption, or deleted tables and rows. Successful recoveries can be achieved even when the SQL database files are missing or deleted.
  • Microsoft® Outlook Personal Store (PST). Successful recoveries can be achieved even when the Personal Store files are missing or deleted.
  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) device hard disk drives. The hard disk drives must be attached to a Microsoft Windows system.
  • External hard drives, memory cards, SanDisk, pen drives, or just about any type of storage device that Microsoft Windows supports. The storage device must be attached to a Microsoft Windows system.
  • Oracle database files with internal corruption, deleted tables or rows, or files that have been deleted
  • NTFS Encrypted files
  • SAN servers
  • Other customised solutions can be developed for your proprietary system.

RDR Advantages

RDR provides the fastest, most convenient, most secure, most cost-effective solution for data loss.

  • Our RDR service is the fastest way to recover your data and saves an average of two days of shipping transit time.
  • Ontrack Data Recovery engineers can start working live on your drive as soon as the connection is established.
  • Your data is secure because your hardware never leaves your premises.
  • Your original drive is protected with a software ‘write-blocker’ application after the connection is established; therefore, your original data is always preserved.

1Encryption levels are based upon individual user computer settings and appropriate Microsoft libraries to be installed.
