In-lab data recovery service process

When you use Ontrack Data Recovery in-lab service, here is what happens during the recovery of your storage device.

1. Data Evaluation

The evaluation process starts on the receipt of the media by our engineers. First, the team of engineers determines the nature of the fault. Secondly, the team determines what needs to be done in order to extract the data from the storage device. This often is a temporary repair in order to get the media accessible or operational.

This evaluation process is especially critical to get right because there may be only one chance to extract the data from the storage device. Next, an evaluation is performed in which a list of recoverable files is provided.

Failure In-Lab solution
Electronic hardware failure

Storage devices with an electronic hardware failure require precision and experience to diagnose the exact problem, complete temporary repairs, and extract the data.
Mechanical failure Mechanical failures of storage devices need minor repairs to become operational; these provisional repairs are made only to extract all of the data.
Unreadable areas of storage media Data areas that cannot be normally extracted require proprietary software and equipment. If data cannot be extracted, then that area is unrecoverable. In many cases, although an area may be unreadable, parts of the affected area may still have data that can be extracted.
Data corruption Data corruption occurs during the storage device’s writing process. Recovery solutions to extract the data focus on rebuilding the corrupted data.
RAID dual hard disk drive failure The clean room focuses on getting one of the storage devices operational; lab engineering focuses on re-assembling the storage array’s data layout.
Fires, floods, other disasters External damage requires careful cleaning and repair of the storage device to get it temporarily functional so that the data can be extracted.
Flash memory recovery Flash memory chips are removed and accessed through proprietary Kroll Ontrack technology; the data is re-assembled by flash software, developed exclusively by the Ontrack data Recovery team.
Hard drive encryption recovery Encrypted hard drives that are inaccessible because the device failed requires the expertise, R&D advances, OEM partnerships, and proprietary tools of Kroll Ontrack.
Solid State Storage (SSD) recovery Engineers will remove the memory chips, if needed, and extract the data. The data is re-assembled with proprietary software.
Tape media recovery Tape media damage requires precision clean room and lab engineering techniques. Kroll Ontrack specialises in advanced tape media recovery methods.

When the steps needed to overcome any challenges in the data extraction are completed, the data has now been extracted in a raw form from the storage device. At this point the data is not usable—the file names must now be associated with the data itself.

2. Data assembly and repair

The raw data needs to be re-assembled into an organised file and folder arrangement so that you will be able to access your files in the locations where they used to be.

Finally the files are verified and copied to your choice of media. Kroll Ontrack uses a variety of proprietary software applications and engineering methods to recover your data. If there are individual files that are known to be damaged due to the data extraction process, then the engineers of Ontrack Data Recovery will repair them with a second set of tools.

Missing data files or email messages

Email content recoveries require in-depth recovery search of the email database or the hard disk drive’s file folders to find the messages.
Corrupted personal email files Corruption inside of the personal email files requires expert solutions of Ontrack Data Recovery engineers to find the original messages and extract them.
Logical Volume Management (LVM) database corruption Recovery of LVM configurations include low-level access to find all of the volume members, re-assemble them, and then list all recoverable files.
Corrupt or incomplete RAID configuration or RAID rebuild failures Failures to DAS and RAID storage configurations require advanced rebuilding expertise specialised technology to re-assemble the data. Ontrack Data Recovery is able to successfully rebuild failed storage systems.
SAN block management corruption Engineers of Kroll Ontrack rebuild the original LUN configuration and block maps of the SAN controller; file listings are provided of individual volumes.
SAN or VMware snapshot management corruption Snapshot data is verified against the volume or virtual disk file and the file system is checked for errors. The most usable snapshot is used for recovery.
Virtual host datastore volume corruption Recovery of host server volumes used for virtual machine storage needs the proprietary knowledge and specialized technology to recover the virtual disks. Kroll Ontrack was the first company to develop and offer virtual recoveries.
Virtual disk provisioning (thin or thick) mapping corruption Virtual disk files are recovered by using a combination of the virtual host server’s mapping tables and the virtual disk’s file system.
File data corruption, corrupted file system structures, Corrupted business database, corrupted email database Kroll Ontrack re-assembles or repairs file data using specialised technology and software. See here for more information about email and database recoveries..
Deleted files, overwritten data files Damaged files require the specialised software technology and engineering methods from Kroll Ontrack to find and recover missing files, or to rebuild damaged files.
Logical volume overwrite, accidental volume reformat, deleted partition or deleted volume Engineers of Kroll Ontrack use specialised software and methods to locate the original volume. Once re-assembled, a listing of recoverable files is completed.
Overwritten data Files with only partial damage can be extracted without the overwritten data sectors; the file is then repaired so that it opens.
