Direct Attached Storage Data Recovery

Direct Attached Storage (DAS) has been the simplest and fastest way to accommodate data growth. DAS requires a computer and an operating system to manage the storage space as a logical volume.

DAS has multiple hard disk drives and the individual space of each hard disk drive is consolidated as a collective pool of storage space. DAS employs device and data configurations (or RAID) to utilise all of the hard disk drives at once and to reduce the risk of volume failure if a single hard disk drive stops working.

Data loss is caused by failures at a hard disk level or at a RAID configuration level. Ontrack Data Recovery services from Kroll Ontrack, provides data recovery solutions for your storage environment regardless of the maker, manufacturer, or proprietary RAID configurations that manufactures have incorporated into their storage products . Our expertise in data has been built on an unrivalled investment in R&D and custom (bespoke) software programming engineering capabilities.

Recovering from DAS Data Loss

DAS failures can be caused by one or a combination of the following events:

  • Overwritten storage configuration
  • Failed RAID rebuild
  • Power surge
  • Second drive failure during RAID rebuild
  • Failed hard disk
    drive(s)

Here are some common DAS configurations and the data loss risks that Kroll Ontrack can overcome with these storage platforms.

DAS RAID configuration Data loss scenarios

RAID 0 + 1 or 1 + 0

Target LUN, iSCSI* LUN identification and low-level RAID verification at the NAS block level.

Risk: This DAS configuration only supports a single drive failure in either of the RAID 0 or RAID 1 groups that have been combined.

RAID 5

This configuration is a combination of data block striping (RAID 0) and a mathematical sum of data blocks from the other hard disk drives (called parity).

Risk: This DAS configuration only supports a single drive failure. This the most common type of RAID implementation for DAS storage.

JBOD
('Just a Bunch of Disks')

This configuration for DAS units concatenates, or streams data, from each of the hard disk drive’s available storage in an end-on-end manner to the next drive.

Risk: A DAS with this configuration will not have any redundancy case of hard disk drive failure.

Recovery for any DAS Storage Interface

Common data connection interfaces of DAS units. Kroll Ontrack can handle all DAS interfaces.

  • SAS
  • Fibre Channel (copper or optical)
  • SCSI
  • Multi-Lane SATA
