Company History
Ontrack had its original roots planted in 1985 with the development of Disk Manager®, a software program that makes the process of installing a computer hard disk much easier. Disk Manager® remains a top-selling software product, and, to date, more than 150-million copies of Disk Manager® have sold worldwide.
The success of Disk Manager® led the company into the business of recovering data from damaged hard disk drives, resulting in the formation of ONTRACK Data Recovery in 1987. ONTRACK Data Recovery pioneered the tools and techniques for the data recovery industry.
As the demand for data recovery services grew, so did ONTRACK Data Recovery’s locations and product offerings: 1991 – ONTRACK Data Recovery opens ONTRACK Data Recovery Europe.
1992 – ONTRACK Data Recovery opens offices in Los Angeles and Washington, DC.
1995 – ONTRACK Data Recovery forms an alliance with Y-E Data, bringing data recovery services to Japan. ONTRACK also begins offering electronic evidence services as it receives requests from lawyers, law enforcement agencies and investigators to perform data recovery services to recover deleted information from computers while, at the same time, keeping a chain-of-custody record while performing these services.
1996 – ONTRACK Data Recovery completes its initial public offering and begins trading on NASDAQ. ONTRACK Data Recovery also opens office in Germany.
1997 – ONTRACK Data Recovery releases Remote Data Recovery, offering its data recovery services over a modem or Internet connection, thereby addressing the needs of customers who could not send media in to one of ONTRACK’s labs due to size or timing considerations. ONTRACK also releases Data Advisor®, a software product helping computer users diagnose problems with a hard disk drive.
1998 – ONTRACK Data Recovery opens office in France and acquires Tiramisu®, a data recovery software product, enhancing and subsequently releasing the product as EasyRecovery™.
1999 – ONTRACK Data Recovery acquires Mijenix Corporation and opens office in Boulder, Colorado. 2000 – ONTRACK Data Recovery releases more than five new versions of existing software products and introduces one entirely new product, Internet Cleanup, a PC-utility product for consumers.
2001 – ONTRACK Data Recovery launches its electronic evidence services under the product brand, DataTrail, offering both e-discovery and computer forensic services. ONTRACK also introduces two first-generation software products in this family called, CaptureIt™, a product producing a mirror image of a PC hard drive, and FacTracker™, a software tool aiding in computer forensic investigations.
2002 – Kroll Inc. acquires ONTRACK Data International and forms a new wholly owned subsidiary of Kroll named Kroll Ontrack Inc., creating Kroll Inc.’s "Technology Services Group." Under TSG, Kroll Inc. markets its electronic discovery and computer forensics services under the brand name "Kroll Ontrack" and markets the data recovery software and services under the brand name "Ontrack Data Recovery."
2003 – Kroll Inc. acquires Oyez Legal Technologies Limited, the U.K. market leader in litigation support and legal information management services, from the OyezStraker Group Limited. The acquisition makes Kroll Ontrack the first provider of an end-to-end litigation support solution in the world.
2004 – Kroll Inc. acquires Quorum Litigation Services , a leading U.S. document coding and litigation support company. The integration of Kroll Ontrack’s longstanding expertise in electronic evidence with Quorum’s longstanding expertise in the handling of paper-based documents gives legal professionals faster, easier and more cost-effective document discovery and management solutions from a single, unified source.
2004 – Marsh & McLennan signs a definitive agreement to acquire Kroll Inc.
