27 September, 2012

Computer equipment has been seized as part of a child protection swoop by Northamptonshire Police.

Seven search warrants were issued and nine arrests were made as part of the operation, being conducted under the Protection of Children Act.

Officers said a large quantity of computer equipment was seized at one of the addresses.

Detective Constable Carole Walton, who led the investigation, said: "The arrests came at the end of a long investigation and I'm delighted with today's results. We are fully committed to tackling what amounts to blatant child abuse.

"Behind every indecent image is a crime scene and an abused child."

Computer forensics is often key to such investigations.

Earlier this year, digital evidence played a crucial role in the prosecution of a paedophile ring in the US.

A three-month investigation carried out in New Jersey resulted in 27 charges and included the analysis of computer files and tracking the digital footprint of suspects.
