Mobile recordings heard in racial abuse case

Mobile phone evidence has been heard in the trial of a police officer accused of racially abusing a suspect.

PC Alex MacFarlane is accused of using racially abusive language during a "slanging match" with Mauro Demetrio after the suspect had allegedly been strangled by another officer.

Southwark crown court was played recordings made by Mr Demetrio on his mobile phone of the incident.

In one of the recordings PC MacFarlane is heard calling Mr Demetrio a "n*****" and told him not to hide behind his black skinMr Demetrio can also be heard in the recording shouting Pc MacFarlane's lapel number and saying he will take charges of racism "all the way".

PC MacFarlane said he was attempting to calm down Mr Demetrio in the exchange and insisted he was trying to explain that he had not been targeted because of his skin colour.
