Shares in Google took a tumble this week after its quarterly results were accidently published ahead of schedule.
The online giant issued a press release shortly afterwards blaming its securities filing company RR Donnelley and Sons.
It was quickly apparent that the publication of the results was an error, as the press release said "pending Larry quote" in place of an actual quote from the Google chief executive officer.
It is likely computer investigations will play an integral role in getting to the bottom of the error.
"We are fully engaged in an investigation to determine how this event took place and are pursuing our first obligation -- which is to serve our valued customer," said RR Donnelley spokesman Doug Fitzgerald.
Shareholders who saw investments fall are unlikely to have a claim as the publication was in error, rather than having malicious intent.
However, Google could have a claim against its security filings company if negligence is uncovered.
