A computer investigation following a man's arrest for arson revealed a plot to shoot hundreds of people at a high school.
California university professor Rainer Reinscheid was arrested after setting a number of small fires at his late son's school, the assistant principal's house and the park where his son died.
Mr Reinscheid was thought to be distressed by his son's suicide after an altercation with the assistant principal at his school.
Following his arrest, self-addressed emails were discovered on his home computer and explained he dreamed of going to the school and shooting at least 200 students and then killing himself.
"I will find this vice principal and find out where he lives, then I will wait for him and kill him," he wrote.
The discoveries lead to prosecutors asking for the 48-year-old to be held without bail.
However, police are as yet unsure if they have uncovered a plot or stumbled across the musings of an inebriated and grieving man.
