Often there are little indicators that your hard drive might be ramping up for a failure.

Clicking or whirring noises are pretty good warning signs, and if you hear these you should ensure your files are backed up pronto.

However, sometimes a hard drive will just crash with little preamble and it is in these cases where people can be tempted to try and tease it back to life themselves.

Unfortunately, unless you know what you are doing with a hard drive, you could make the problem much worse.
