A study by IBM and University of Oxford has shown that businesses in the UK are beginning to understand the advantages of data management. Almost two thirds (63 per cent) are aware that big data gives them a competitive edge, and therefore utilise their data management system to their advantage. However, the study also showed that a huge number of businesses are not using all avenues of data management. "Less than half of the organizations engaged in active big data initiatives are currently collecting and analyzing external sources of data," it says. Only 39 per cent currently analyse data from social media, with the same percentage not using external feeds to their advantage. Merely 37 per cent use geospatial data. Michael Schroeck, global information management leader, IBM Global Business Services, believes that this lack of utilisation with some elements of big data is down to an uncertainty over how to begin. "What they struggle with, however, is how to get started on their Big Data journey," he said. Information is critical to the successful running of most businesses.
