Spanish mobile phone company and owner of O2, Telefonica is using big data to gain big money by selling information about its customers. Telefonica intend to sell phone-user's location information to businesses in order to allow the companies to better understand the motives of their customers. "Using our aggregated and anonymised mobile phone mast data we can provide retailers with a digital headcount to help them understand the movement of crowds," a spokesperson told the BBC. An example of when this type of information would be useful could be for the marketing group of sportswear shops. They could decipher where it is that sports fans normally congregate after a game, and consequently build a shop in that area. The use of data management in this way could give companies a competitive edge. Intricate knowledge of a customer is vital in selling products and increasing revenue.
