The hottest topics of data management at the moment are Big Data and Hadoop.
According to Steve Sarsfield, author of The Data Governance Imperative and product marketing manager at Talend, these two things are game changers when it comes to how companies need to manage and archive data.
"Why? Because companies are able to expand the information they usually use to learn about their customers with new technology and new sources of information," he explained.
This is a move away from using internal customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning systems.
Now, however, information comes from social media, web logs, devices, cell phones and many other new sources and businesses are faced with the challenge of sculpting useful data out of the huge amount that comes in.
"We're hearing case studies where retail is more able to predict customer behaviour and perfectly target users exactly when they are ready to buy," he added.
In order to make the most of the vast levels of data pouring in, firms need to ensure their data management processes are up to the challenge.
Data is at the core of most modern businesses. Kroll Ontrack provides services and software to help you better manage key data such as MS Exchange and SharePoint.
