Outsourcing data management responsibilities to third party suppliers is beginning to look increasingly attractive to investment managers, claims a leading alternative investment solutions expert. In a guest article for Hedge Week, State Street Alternative Investment Solutions senior managing director Pat Hayes underlined the difficulties presented by a tightening regulatory structure. He also points to problems faced by firms which have recently been involved in mergers and acquisitions, where multiple systems have been inherited and are in need of replacing. He believes the new cost conscious and risk averse climate gives new impetus to the challenges posed by data management. "Outsourcing enables asset managers to delegate … key administrative responsibilities that threaten to distract them from their core investment focus," he wrote. The growth and ubiquity of mobile devices in the workplace also presents firms with new data management problems. While many companies have adopted bring your own device policies, it can help to get an independent view of the implications, so that appropriate steps can be taken to keep data management under control.
