Data loss for laptops 'costs firms dearly'

Category: Data recovery

27 April, 2009

Companies can be greatly affected by the loss of a laptop and the corresponding data which it contains, a new study has shown.

Research carried out by the Ponemon Institute has revealed that the average cost to a business if a laptop containing company information is lost stands at $49,246 (£33,674).

Furthermore, the loss of a laptop belonging to a company manager or director could cost a firm up to $61,000 through the possibility of lost information, intellectual property theft, a fall in productivity and legal costs, the report stated.

"It is the information age and employees are carrying more information on their laptops than ever before," the study noted.

Meanwhile, Lincoln Spector recently wrote in a blog for PC World that the development of corrupt sectors on computer hard drives could lead to significant cases of data loss.

Therefore, he advised businesses to maintain a good data protection strategy and improve their data backup systems in order to have up-to-date copies of all records.
