Data deletion must be considered for BYOD

Category: Data destruction

7 September, 2012

Organisations are under increasing pressure to increase flexibility by introducing mobile devices in the workplace.

Some are keen to save upfront costs and encourage workers to use their own personal devices for work purposes.

This has the advantage of saving the organisation money in buying and replacing smartphones and tablets in the workplace, however it does raise issues surrounding security and data deletion.

Businesses need to ensure they have a clear policy in place to inform employees that any corporate information on the device belongs to the company, despite it being a personal phone.

It is also important to lay down processes for securely deleting any sensitive information on the device when an employee leaves the company or department.

This is more complicated than simply hitting the delete button so organisations need to have procedures in place.

Communication with employees from the start is also vital to ensure they are aware of the changes.
