Because of physical storage cost and the data recovery benefits of the cloud, many organisations are turning to online storage for their archiving needs.

Data archiving allows businesses to understand the motives of their customer throughout time.

Businesses can see an individuals' history with their company - how long they have been a customer, how often they have used their business, and what their trends of usage are.

The cloud is endlessly collecting data about individuals, all of which can be analysed by businesses.

"We do a lot of transactions via the web, we have our iPhones, we have data constantly being collected about us," says Steve Sarsfield, a data governance blogger and author.

Companies are able to analyse and gain knowledge about their customer from this ever-growing rise in big data, giving them a competitive edge.
