A key way to ensure data is secure is to remove the internet connection, but it could make data management more complex.
Graeme Batsman, director of Datadefender.co.uk, said that the greatest threat to businesses is often not hackers, but the internet connection.
"If you've got a laptop and you take away your internet connection the computer is about 99.99 per cent secure, the only way to get at it is to break into the office," he said.
However, this means that businesses who want to work offline would need to invest in two computers for every member of staff and an offline server – which is fine for small firms but can get expensive if the company has a large payroll.
Although there have been concerns about the security of the cloud, it is considered an incredibly secure data management solution for those who need to work online.
Managers should consider the cloud in the same way they think about emails. No one worries about whether their email provider is snooping on their data and the cloud is the same basic premise.
